Subject: midnight thoughts

Received from a reader by Planet Waves Friday, Sep. 3, 1999

I woke up in the wee hours of the morning, before my alarm was set to go
off...and what popped into my head but all the stuff I've been reading
in the planet waves horoscopes about sex. I've been into the ideas. My
gemini sun and sag rising totally grasp those words of wisdom and run.
As I snuggled down into the softness of my bed (alone I have to add), I
let my mind work it gently through. My midnight thoughts gave me some
additional insights that I think are more inpired by the fact that I
have a saturn-venus conjunction in Taurus in the 5th house. I just wish
sex could be so simple as finding someone hot and willing and getting
down to pleasure. I don't mean this to be any kind of lecture, but as
someone whose been through several borderline rape experiences, I know
on a pretty deep level that there's also some terrifying and yucky stuff
about sex. I think that stuff is pretty connected to the nasty double
standards we have about the whole sensual side of life, but nonetheless,
through personal experience it enters the psyche and holds pernicious
influence when it comes to juicy, wild encounters. So, my first
insight was that our massive cultural (patriarchal) problem with sex
doesn't just tell us having sex is bad, it also tells us not having sex
is bad and boring. Sometimes I think a break from sex can teach you
more about sensual experience than years of having "fucked up" sex. One
of the things it's taught me is that intimacy is POTENT. The effects
aren't just physical, they reach deep emotional, soulful, and spiritual
realms of the being. So while I agree with you poking fun at the new
age idea of "sacred sex," I also think we need to recognize that in it's
essence a sexual encounter involves the soul. And that leads to my
second spark: people tend to think being spiritual is all about
floating in the ethers, but that's really only a part of it.
Spirituality is also about the courser, deeper, crazier parts of life.
My big beef with new age ideology is that if we're spiritual enough
everything is going to be happy and groovy with no pain ever again for
eternity. So my take would be this: yes indeed sex is very spiritual,
and though it can be floaty in the spirit realms, it mainly dwells in
the root chakra region and is of a deeper soulful character.
If anything, the eclipse has brought sex to the forefront of
mysteries for me to consider. I could go on and on..... Instead, I'll
thank you profusely for being a great sources of ideas and inspiration.
Goddess Bless, R.
