Happy Birthday, Aquarius!

For all Aquarians, but particularly for those born in the earliest days of this sign, you are headed for a truly extraordinary year. Normally, the future is never far from the past, and there are often difficult to sort overlaps where one merges into the other. Yet quite often, the difference between the two time frames is a perspective or state of mind. It's precisely this perspective that changes so radically in the coming months. This is a time when you are likely to question not merely anything, but quite nearly everything.

In times of such radical personal change, reverence and respect for the past can provide important grounding. Tradition is an organized, orderly way of respecting the past without dwelling on it or getting stuck there. Perhaps take this as a reminder to check in with your personal traditions and ways of doing things before blazing ahead into a new phase of your life story. This will not set you back; to the contrary, it will provide you with some grounding in a time when so many developments toward which your life has been leading arrive faster than you ever expected.

Part of this story is told by the entry of Chiron and Nessus, two high-voltage small planets, into your birth sign. They form a long conjunction through May, which will in many respects wake up the world; yet for you, it is directly personal. The story is also told by the ingress of your ruling planet Saturn (from the old astrology, still important) into your 7th house, Leo — the house of relationships. This is a get-serious time for you where affairs of the heart and of business are concerned. You may have been getting messages to this effect for many moons, but as summer approaches, evidence that your life really is moving to a new place will be undeniable.

Chiron and Saturn make an excellent pairing; one is an expert in breaking tradition, and the other is an expert in maintaining it. There should always be a discussion, and there will be one, both in your own inner space and the space of your relationships. And with Jupiter so well aspected in your chart, you have a strong wind of good fortune to depend on if and when times become challenging; you can indeed count on forces such as 'luck' and the goodwill of your brothers, sisters and cousins to speed you along.

Don't worry: they are depending on you just as much, if not more. What this world needs now is change, and in true Aquarian style, you are about to become the embodiment of that concept. Keep your feet on the ground, remember both logic and inspiration, and know when the time comes — in the immortal words of Fritz Perls — to lose your mind and come to your senses.

Happy Birthday, Aquarius!

Many changes are happening in your life; some you see, but some you don't. Some you have heard about; others remain perfectly hidden. They will emerge in time — perhaps, not so long at all. I can, at minimum, promise that the coming four seasons represent a time of radical awakening; of being born into an entirely new reality and concept of reality. In the coming weeks and months (emphasis on 'weeks') you're likely to be presented with a great many options that are, at this point, concealed.

Yet one quality that should not — by all astrological indicators — be particularly hidden at this time is that you want something different from your life. There are some people who dream a little easier than others; Aquarius can find himself or herself involved in patterns that don't really allow much in the way of sweet visions of life's potential. Much can seem to be withheld. And for many Aquarians there can be an odd sense of detachment from the flow of life and from the warm pulse at its core.

But a lot of this is a trick of the mind. We are all equally human. And what your human sensibilities are now guiding you to do is envision the life you want. This is daring work, to delve into the architecture of existence. But you're an inventor at heart, and what you need to begin inventing is what you want your life and your world to be like.

These discussions are often governed by what we think is possible. It's an inventor's job to get over that little hump, and start with what is necessary or desirable and work in that particular direction. At the moment, what you are capable of hoping for and dreaming; what you feel is the best possible solution; what exceeds your current hopes — all of these are possible, if you agree.

Events and developments of this year promise to change your ideas about some of the more subtle points of perception. What is true and what is not? What is the relationship between your personal truth and the larger truth? What is your relationship to substances that change your consciousness, and is there any time when these may be used with integrity? Is the person you present to the world the 'real you' or is it a made-up personality?

Last and certainly not least, what is the meaning of relationships in your life? What would it mean, to you, to treat relationships with infinitely more respect than you've ever known, or than this world calls normal?

These are questions that will come to the surface in small bits and, at times, in sweeping moments of self-inquiry that will leave you a more solid, confident and authentic person than you've ever been before.

Happy Birthday, Aquarius!

A subtle balance has tipped in your life. You may not be feeling it yet, but I suspect that on some level it's registered in your awareness. It's not like everything has suddenly gotten better all at once. But things — that is, you — are changing. Before the changes you're going through now disappear into the past, I suggest you notice what they are. Notice, for instance, what your life was like a month ago, and what has changed today. You will likely see 100 subtle and not-so-subtle developments. What, perchance, is the source of all this change?

I could say a lot about the astrology associated with this, but the symbols of astrology are merely representatives of real forces within your psyche. These forces have suddenly become more creative than in many years. But what has really happened is that you are, in an odd way, no longer able to deny their existence. And that is a pretty big change.

Once awareness changes, the door to anything and everything changing is open. In this respect, while your life and the astrology parallel to it are putting on a good show, you haven't seen anything yet. The layers that were wrapping who you were in veils of fog and mystery are about to start peeling off even faster. While this may have an unsettling effect at first, you're pretty good at running high voltages of energy and making decisions quickly, or as needed. The interesting part will be seeing just how much energy those decisions can move.

What you will also very likely tap into is how each choice you make stems from some deep issue, concern or area of growth within you. Stated another way, the alignment of your inner world and your outer world is growing ever closer. Your thoughts, actions and outcomes are beginning to exist in a closer loop, with faster results.

This being said, one of the most important things you can do is keep your doors of communication with people in your life open. There may not be any overt pressure to change relationships now, but soon they, too, will become a focal point of growth, and the more clearly you are able to relate to the people closest to you, the easier and more productive the changes will be. You have to admit, certain developments are long overdue. And you will soon see that their time has arrived.

Happy Birthday, Aquarius!

In this life we often must exceed what we think of as our potential. Yet few people even get to the point where they allow themselves to sense their most basic potential, let alone exceed it. The time has come for both.

First a bit of history. In the 1970s there was a (seemingly) minor psychological and social revolution called the Human Potential Movement. The main idea of that cultural wave is that people can reach into themselves and, with a little help, heal their doubts and fears, and bring into the world more of who they truly are — often much more, and often coming with a sweeping transformation of their worldview, their role and their state of being.

This, and more, is available to you.

It's just that you might not feel it at this particular moment as any more than a possibility, no matter how excited you are about your life. Because Chiron is still in Capricorn at the time of your solar return, it may seem like a perpetual dream that is out of reach. Yet this need not be the case. One of the most typical ways Chiron works is by prompting us to work a little harder at what we want. Yet that sense of 'out of reach' is a chirotic effect. It appears to be a debility; in fact it is motivation to keep reaching, to aspire, to have faith.

Let's focus a bit on the symbolism of Chiron in this state in your solar return chart, dangling in one of the last degrees of Capricorn, a sign it's occupied since late 2001 (remember back then? Remember everything that's happened?). This is symbolic of the healing force residing deep in your unconscious. Or rather, guarding the gate to the unconscious. If you reach in just a little, through any particular portal available — meditation, dreams, tarot, astrology, or however else you may bend or stretch your consciousness — you will very likely find this quality, this energy, this aspect of your psyche, being the first thing that you reach.

Beware: many experience Chiron as the 'sense of being injured' or the 'sense of what is missing'. Stay with this feeling long enough to see through it. Stay long enough to notice just what your journey, struggle or adventure has given to you. Plan for what your life would be like if you were free from the things that have held you down in the past. Reach in its direction. Soon enough, the force for healing and transformation through awareness will be reaching back in yours.
