The Kemner Brief | Planet Waves Special Report

ARIES (March 21-April 19)
You are passing through what I can only describe as an ideological training ground which will prove to be very helpful as you begin the next phase of your career. And there is no question that your star is rising. But one of the crises we face culturally is that once people get to positions of power, authority or creative expression, they frequently lack the awareness, sensitivity and, in a sense, moral training to fulfill their function ethically. And it's precisely this that your current experience is not only guarding against, but serving to provide you with knowledge, understanding and a global viewpoint which will, in the end, ensure that, with power in your hands, you're one of the most trustworthy people a community could want.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
Your long-term view needs to go as far as where you need to be at your next birthday. While this may seem far in the future, I assure you that, given what opportunities you are in line for at that time and how much preparation you must complete before then in order to make the most of them, you will need to use every one of the weeks of these next seven months very wisely. I recognize that you're often slow in the progress department, and that radical departures rarely seem like the right thing. But change alone is certain, and you alone get to decide what direction the change will take, and you alone control whether your life is open enough at the time to take advantage of what is coming.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
There is no way you can have any real predictability as to how your relationships in the coming year will unfold. The people by whom you will be met, and with whom you will be confronted, are likely to test the limits of even your very flexible mind. You will need to redefine your ideas of success and failure with people, and the extent to which you are indeed successful at connecting with people relates to your ability to suspend your often harsh judgments. What you have been seeking for some time is to go much more deeply than you've been able to in the past. There's never been a time within your lifetime when that was more possible, or more probable, but you must be willing to dare.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)
The seeking of knowledge is best approached in a state of innocence. By that I mean simple curiosity about what is so. Complicating factors to watch out for are things like the fear that you will seek the truth but not attain it; that what you want to know or understand is of no real use; that you are too small to ever be taken seriously; that it is wrong to simply try even when what you are seeking may be very elusive. The mere act of seeking, of trying, of attempting (however you see it) changes us deeply. Beliefs are useless unless they are tested, desires are merely frustrations unless we seek their fulfillment, and curiosity will surely work against us unless we look and see.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
Your life is not an academic project or an emotional rumination. Your progress is not marked in the number of days you have endured or whether you are certified by another person to do something. Life is about what you do, what you see, and what you find out from taking chances and getting involved in the opportunities you notice. All the knowledge in the world will not help you accomplish something when the time comes to actually make the effort, and it can't really prepare for the unknown anyway. Yet you do not lack learning or maturity. What you could use is courage, and a some well-deserved confidence in yourself. What you could use is some imagination.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
In our melting pot of American culture, where there really are no wide-scale cultural traditions (Christmas shopping doesn't count), it's very easy for us to lose touch with our ancestral roots. For the most part, we are attuned to the liabilities we have taken on as a result of being born into the families were, and modern psychology, with its emphasis on family pathology, has all but obscured the fact that we possess a true genetic inheritance passed on for hundreds of generations. Recent developments or revelations may have provided clues as to the nature of yours. If not, look a little closer; something important is at hand.

LIBRA (Sep. 23-Oct. 22)
Every time I look at the charts for Libra, I get the sense that you have really gotten a grip on your life. You are in a rare condition in which change seems possible, and stability seems possible, as does reconciling some polarities that were, in the past, very troubling. At the risk of seeming insensitive to those of you who may just happen to be having a hard time despite very positive aspects, it is a fact that you have a lot to be thankful for and a lot to look forward to. And, on top of that, there is no excuse for you not to take full advantage of every offer, opportunity and mysterious turning point that truly fits your life plan. And if you have no plan, remember it's really safe to just to go along for the journey.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
It is, I would propose, a deep tendency of Scorpio to associate revealing your feelings with losing your power. I don't suppose you put it so clearly to yourself, and have all kinds of reasons for not really coming out with what you really know, think or feel. But in my view, it comes down to power. Once you reveal your inner reality, you cannot take it back, and it seems you feel you're under some obligation to stick to what you said was true yesterday. But look at it this way: expressing your feelings allows you to look at them in a new way, and with feedback. Then, you're perfectly free to have a change of heart and mind. So by expressing yourself, you get to explore, evolve, and understand.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21)
I imagine you will view this time in your life as being about the birth of the real you -- the moment of emergence of the person inside who you always suspected you were, but somehow could not reach. Let me remind you that you'll now have to get to know this person whom you are. You will need to explore your new possibilities and get accustomed to seeing the world through different eyes. I truly hope that you will see all of the struggle and controversy of the past two years as preparing you for this moment, and let it stand as a reminder of how much you didn't know at some critical moments in which you were so sure.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Faith is scary. It can indeed move mountains, and yet we live in a faithless world where most people spend most of their time being afraid. But the fear you are most inclined to experience relates to the sense of awe and, quite possibly, psychological instability that comes with pure burning faith. Faith is a vital elemental force, and the elements can destroy as well as give life to our creations. The distinction depends on what you do with your opportunity: will you fight what you know, trust and believe on the deepest level, or will you all your decisions to be guided by an inner sense of life that few others acknowledge?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 19-Feb. 18)
I suggest you not make such a big deal out of the struggle between old and new. Even if you went the whole distance on your most far-flung ideas, you would not exactly be a reckless deviant. For some time you have been in contact with the idea of what it means to let go of old karma; to release the qualities of your life and the personal traits that have held you into ruts. This whole concept is still pretty fresh in your mind. But something is changing; life is at once getting easier, but so too is the possibility that you will remain who you were rather than become who you want to be. The choice is still yours.

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
You have invested great energy asking questions without answers, or at least that's how it seems from the viewpoint of a "mundane" person peering into the mind of a cosmic Pisces. Remember that part of standing in your power means being beyond reproach, and experiencing regret as a fleeting emotion. Part of claiming your place in the world involves standing in your individuality and, quite literally, not taking philosophical challenges to who you are seriously. You must simply be, and aspire, and let the world deal with it. And there are no questions without answers, only questions whose answers have not yet come.

For the Faithful
Is anyone really capable of understanding the world we live in? A great economist and statesman with a passion for the history of art might fail to get a glimpse of humanity's place in the cosmic order. Other people who are right in touch with the natural processes and cycles panic at the thought of getting involved in understanding world problems, much less taking a leadership role in solving them. We all see a little piece of the world, or so it seems. There is a loosely-organized system of belief suggesting that the world we see is really a hologram, that is, a three-dimensional representation of another reality, and that everything we experience reflects the larger whole. Children can see the world in a grain of sand; many adults can, but then doubt that it's real.
