Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.

-- J.R.R. Tolkien, from The Fellowship of the Ring

ARIES (March 21-April 19)
When it seems like people are changing around you, it's good to check in with the possibility that you are the one who is making progres. It's not always the case, but these days it seems to be, and by progress I mean pushing ahead with such determination that you know nobody can stop you. Remember that people who hold strong convictions often show up as some kind of threat on the radar of those who prefer a more wishy-washy, nondescript or noncommital approach to life. And, being the essentially political animals that humans are, we often feel a need to respond to that sense of threat. It may not be necessary. In any case, a lot more will become abundantly clear after the Sun changes signs next week at the autumn equinox.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
When I get all confuddled exploring the complexities of Taurus, I have to remind myself that difficult as it may be to comprehend what is happening over in the part of the sky known as your life, you are the one who has to live with yourself. For the moment, that is taking some patience, which you've got plenty of, but patience can work for us as well as it can work against us. You may feel you have all kinds of catching up to yourself to do, but as far as I can see things, it looks like you have everything you need, and know all of everything you need to know, and possess all the emotional readiness you've been working out, in order to take the next big step; in fact, you may have already taken it.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
Someone you work with, perhaps someone you have not noticed, may turn out to play a much greater role in your life. It's not just an office romance; it's potentially an opportunity for an unusual and unlikely combination of minds and spirits that could touch many dimensions. At minimum, you are likely to encounter someone who turns out to be a significant teacher, and assists at least at one crucual turning point, providing information that could be very helpful to you. Often we miss these people, because we're quick to judge anyone different than us as unworthy of our attention. Pay attention, and, as a general guideline, where relationships are concerned, expect the unexpected starting now.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)
We both known you are tenacious, but your ongoing obsessive streak has to end sooner or later because your mind needs a rest. Too much attention to detail or petty politics can blind you to the greater realities, as well as the more subtle aspects of your environment, which can, in turn, block you from noticing opportunities when they present themselves -- including opportunities to relax. You're more or less scheduled to pull back next week, though I really suggest you do it a lot sooner, and get a grip on reality while there's still a handle.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
You may be feeling very daring these days, with traces of doubt and emotional anguish leaving you in a mood to do anything but try something new. I don't see this lasting much longer, and once you have noticed that your desires and your emotional resolve are in the same place, there will be no stopping you. You are about to enter a prolonged phase of life in which you feel like there are no bounds to what you can believe, and no limits on what kinds of fun you can explore. You know you must, and I trust you will; what you're experiencing now should provide one last look at how the "wisdom" of neurotic parents can seem to spoil your fun decades after the fact.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
I suggest you give yourself one last birthday present, and if you haven't given yourself any yet, then you'll need to find two others please. As for the third -- write yourself a long letter, explaining the meaning of all the things you're pondering, meditating on and struggling with in life. This is not just a writing exercise. It's clear that you have a lot of information to offer yourself, but that you're unlikely to notice it if you don't get something in writing -- something long and rambling, because the pearls you're seeking could come up at any moment, including in the p.s., or as a joke written on the envelope.

LIBRA (Sep. 23-Oct. 22)
You're racking your brains trying to figure out something you already know. There are other forms this mystery may take -- such as the idea that someone in the office just to the left of yours has some vital information, but there is no office to the left. You may sense that a person up on the fifth floor is ready to help you out, but there is no such place. Or that a letter mailed to you long ago, with missing details of everything you've been going through, is hung up in another dimension. Soon enough you'll remember exactly what you know, notice that long corridor running to the left, find a button for the 5th floor in the elevator, and that letter will arrive.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
There's a big difference between intellectually knowing who you are, and having full access to the benefits of your resources. You're about to find out what that difference really is. The Sun's movement into Libra next week is likely to come with a series of revelations and discoveries that light up the inner byways of your soul, and hand you the key to your personal treasure troves. In the mean time, there is no reason for you to proceed through life thinking you're anything less than you are, anything other than a value or asset to your community or company, or, more to the point, anything less than worthy of your own respect.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21)
The mind plays many games. One that I see is possible for your mind to be playing with you involves a kind of struggle over whether you have the right to exist. This may sound strange, but it's actually a fairly common affliction, and were it not for this, most people's lives would be a lot closer to their inner wishes. What you're likely to experience is an exaggerated, and temporary, form of this process, which may come in the form of extreme doubts about who you are, what you believe or the image you project into the world. All you need to do is notice, for these questions, when they arise, are likely to seem so ridiculous that they will answer themselves once and for all.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Chiron's transit into the 12th house of your solar chart will take your mind off of old concerns about fitting into the world, and let you feel what it's like to wonder about more important matters, such as fitting into the universe. We are put through a lot of conditioning to strip away our natural experience of being part of the cosmic order, and to deafen us to the callings from realms that have been written about and spoken of for aeons. Now you are less likely to ignore these mysteries, though it would help immensely if you gave up worrying about whether the things you are so talented at really are of any use to the rest of us.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 19-Feb. 18)
The hard-boiled, "prove it to me" mind of an Aquarian typically has little use for religion, but you at least are an Aquarian who is open to the possibilities enough to be reading a horoscope column. Yet we all have religion. It's like an expansion slot in the mind that must be filled by something, and while we can't function with it empty, we get to choose what we accept into that very personal space. If you ask me, the perfect religion for you would worship art, beauty and love, and you are about to enter your holy season. Just in time, too, after your recent delves into the world of business and finance have left you looking for something a little more precious.

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
It is indeed a great mystery, and a complicated one, how you got to where you presently are. For that matter, you are still not working with full information about where here actually is or what now is all about, and I would suspect you feel the world has presented you with far fewer decent choices than you could make use of. As if a spell were being dissolved or removed from you, a whole vista of possibilties is about to make itself known, along with a blast of resolve and determination to actually take advantage of the choices. But the question remains: What would it take to get you to see yourself exactly where you want to be?

For the Faithful
Next week, as the Sun enters the sign Libra and the autumn begins in the northern hemisphere, a tiny planet called Chiron changes signs from the emotional, psychic and sexual depths of Scorpio, to the fiery, positive and visionary reaches of Sagittarius. Difficult as it is to predict whether a planetary transit, even an important one such as this, will signify changes on a cultural level, I am optimistic. Chiron in Sagittarius can be about nothing other than creating and experiencing higher ideas about who and what we are, something that is sorely lacking right now. Remember, though: vision is a muscle, and it becomes strong through use.
